LAC PROFESSIONAL TENNIS STAFF PROFILEJudi Laursen - B.S., USPTA., PTR.Head Professional: Tournaments, Leagues and Programming DirectorEducation- Judi holds a Bachelors of Science from Colorado State University in Education. After teaching in a private center for 15 years, she went on to become certified as a tennis professional first with the Professional Tennis Registry, and then with the United States Professional Tennis Association. Experience- Judi began her teaching career at the local YMCA, and went on to create opportunities for tennis through the Longmont Tennis Association in the mid 70's before coming to the Longmont Athletic Club. She has been instrumental in the development of indoor tennis programming it the area since 1994. Judi has also coached tennis at Niwot and Skyline High Schools, as well as assisting during her oldest daughter's high school career at Longmont High, and currently with her youngest at Silver Creek. As a player, Judi has held ranki ng in the State and Intermountain regions since 1990, and currently holds #1 State ranking in Mother/Daughter, and #2 ranking in 45's and 50's. Interests/Hobbies- Judi enjoys being involved in her children's activities, as well as biking and traveling, when not playing in tournaments. Teaching Philosophy- A passion for teaching and for the game has kept Judi on the courts for over 25 years. A "Client-Centered" approach is the cornerstone of her teaching philosophy; as well as keeping current on industry trends and professional development. Steve Williams - B.A., EMT-B, USPTAHead Professional and Junior CoordinatorEducation- Steve has a Bachelors degree from the University of Kansas located in Lawrence, KS and is certified as an emergency medical technician. Experience- Steve has several years of experience teaching and coaching in the Kansas City area. He has worked as a pro at Overland Park Racquet Club, Woodside Racquet Club, and Lake Quivira Country Club. Steve has also helped coach the varsity players at his high school in Kansas City at Shawnee Mission West High School, where Steve was the #1 varsity singles player sophomore through senior years. He achieved a sectional ranking as a junior player in the Missouri Valley area, and also played college tennis for Johnson County Community College, where he was the #3 singles player and a quarterfinalist at nationals. Steve finished 2007 ranked # 5 in Colorado at the championship level. In June 2008, he was hired as the Assistant Tennis Coach at the University of Northern Colorado working with both the men's and women's teams. In January 2008, Steve was one of 17 coaches nationally to be selected to the USTA High Performance Coaching Camp in Boca Raton, Florida. Interests/Hobbies- Steve enjoys traveling as often as possible, hiking, and trail running. He has a passion for college sports and will talk University of Kansas basketball with anyone willing to listen. Teaching Philosophy- "I believe that footwork is the foundation for solid technique. All of the junior classes emphasize constant movement and footwork. I primarily teach the USPTA modern coaching technique to my students. The open stance groundstrokes and semi-western grip will be introduced to all players when they are ready. I believe that tennis classes should be fun at all levels, and teaching game-based drills enhances the enjoyment of the game. Marlin Godown, USPTAAssistant Tennis ProfessionalEducation- Marlin holds a BA Degree in psychology from Wichita State University. He has several years of experience working with children and adults in educational and recreational settings. Marlin earned his USPTA certification from the United States Tennis Teaching Association in 1997. Experience- Marlin began playing tennis when he was 10 years old and played varsity tennis at West High School in Wichita for three years. He began teaching tennis in the mid 1980's, becoming a coach at Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins and Longmont HIgh School in Longmont. Marlin has had a successful playing career holding state and intermountain rankings in senior and mixed events. He was voted the senior player of the year by the USPTA and ITA in 2006. Interests/Hobbies- Marlin enjoys biking and hiking when not playing competitive tennis. Teaching Philosophy- Marlin has a great passion for the game of tennis. He believes you can incorporate the modern tennis concepts with the tactical strategies of the classical style to get the best results for each type of player. MARTA ROCHA, InstructorEducation- Marta holds a Bachelor degree in Psychology from Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Argentina. Experience- Marta started playing tennis when she was 11 years old in a club in Mar del Plata, Argentina. As a junior, in the under 15 years old category, she was ranked number two in her country and she also reached a number five ranking in the 16-18 years old. She represented Argentina in the South American Tournament in 1969 held in Uruguay. Marta moved to Lawrence, Kansas in 1980 and spent may years raising her three children. She returned to the sport in 1994 and after moving to Cincinnati in 1997, she started playing competition and teaching tennis at various club. She has been teaching juniors and adults and also competing in the USTA tournaments- Singles and Doubles Conference 5.0. Marta has won the Hamilton (Ohio) Singles Open in 2005 and 2006. Interest/Hobbies- Marta enjoys aerobic classes, dancing, and reading. She also wishes Colorado whoud have a beach, since she grew up by the ocean. Teaching Philosophy- Marta's focus is in "good technique", which she considers is the big window to improvement at any age. She sets goals, helps the players know their own weakness, sets drills to improve those weaknesses, and pushes the players to remember the "basics" when they are playing matches- watch the ball, move your feet, and bend your knees.
